Chapter 17

Kyra

I’m standing behind the closed doors, listening to the sounds on the other side. There is the chatter of guests discussing amongst themselves while they wait. There is the gentle sound of rain pattering on the roof.

Of course, my inner thoughts and turmoil drown out all of that. My chest feels tight with anxiety, and I’m breathing more quickly than I normally would be.

It’s almost time for me to walk down the aisle and marry the person I used to think I wanted to spend the rest of my life with.

Used to want. Now, I’m far less certain.

But here I am, and a contract is a contract.

We were planning to have the wedding a couple more months from now, but Frank told us that we had to move up the timeline. With that came a change in venue; there wasn’t enough time to plan the event overseas, so we are here in our hometown.

Well, that was entirely okay with me, of course. The sooner I can get this over with, the sooner I can get the hell out of Dodge and live the rest of my life as a free woman.

I have to say, though, I love the dress that Taylor helped me pick out. It’s long and flowy, but not puffy, not wide. It flows like a peaceful river, and as Taylor said, shows enough cleavage to draw attention, but not enough to be slutty.

Her words. Not mine.

The church is a large, immaculate, and ornate place, which is typical of historical structures in this area.

I have to concentrate on breathing in and out. I can’t fall apart now.

I hear the music start, and my heart begins to beat like a bongo drum.

BANG. BANG. BANG. I feel my pulse as the doors fly open, and I’m exposed to the expectant guests.

Last chance, Kyra… I tell myself.

Well, not really, though. I signed a contract. This is what I signed up for.

Fifty mil, Kyra. Fifty mil…

I never had a good relationship with my family, and certainly not with my father. I used to blame myself for it, but the older I got, the more I realized they were just leeches. I dropped them like a bad habit and never looked back.

That is, all except my uncle on my dad’s side. When my dad left us, his brother had kind of stepped in to fill some of the void. In the end, he ended up becoming more of a parent to me than either of my real parents.

Good old Uncle Craig. When I began college, he had to leave town for work, and unfortunately, I didn’t get to see him much after that. But out of every man I’ve known in my life, he deserves to walk me down the aisle the most– even if the marriage is just a sham.

Uncle Craig looks over at me, adorned in his classic gray suit, and slips his arm through my own.

“Ready?” he asks me. Of course, he’s under the impression that this is all for real.
